Due to recent events I have found the need to add a medical care page to my site, hopefully this will shed some light as to what should and should not happen at a vet visit. When you get your joey you should have it seen by your vet for a wellness visit within 72 hrs of its arrival. This will help you establish a base line for your joey as well as help you get acquainted with your vet. During this visit your vet should get a weight on the joey, check his overall health and get a fecal (float & smear) this will ensure your joey is free of parasites. This would also be a good time to discuss emergency care after hours as most medical emergencies will happen or be noticed at night when gliders are most active.
Because gliders are exotics and not every vet is experienced with them there are a few things I want to mention:
1.
A gliders teeth should NEVER under any circumstance be clipped, filed or cut down. They are NOT rodents and their teeth will not regrow. This practice can cause severe medical issues for your glider.
2.
A female glider can NOT under ANY circumstance be spayed!!! Due to their anatomy and size the procedure is way too invasive and will result in the death of the glider.
3.
A gliders patagiums (wings, gliding membrane) should never be clipped or cut in any manner. A bonded glider will want to be with you and look for you for security. This practice is cruel and inhumane and any incidence of this practice should be reported to the authorities.
When is it necessary to take your glider to the vet? Anytime you think something is just not right is the best answer I can give you. Why? Gliders are known to hide illness very well, if you know your glider VERY well you maybe be able to tell something is not right. This is the time to act! Tomorrow may be too late. If you find your glider cold, at the bottom of the cage, crabbing incessantly for no apparent reason GO TO THE VET!!!!! This is NOT the time to post about it on the boards, there is NOT much time and the odds are against your baby. It needs medical attention right away I can not stress this enough!!! You can post about it later.
In the event you can not find a glider knowledgeable vet in your area any vet is better than none! I have a list of experienced vets that will consult with your vet and ONLY your vet in the event that they are needed. Please keep in mind these vets do this out of kindness and their generosity shall not be abused in any way.
